Harn Regional Maps - Discussion

Fastred's picture

Well... we have released the Hârn Regional Maps (printed and Interactive PDF).....

What does everyone think?

Jeremy

Gavigan's picture

Why does a link to avchat.net appear in grid B8 in the English Geography layer in (my copy of) the PDF. It certainly detracts from the overall impression of this beautiful map. Surely, this must be a mistake.

Neil's picture

I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out Gavigan. Mine's the same. :(

Interesting. My version does NOT have it. Clearly this is a mistake. Working on fix now.

rbs's picture

Mine has it too.

The English Geog layer was the last thing done on the PDF and probably an accidental Paste action dropped something in there that didn't get caught in the last proof checking.

I'm sure Jeremy will fix it and provide a replacement as soon as he learns of it. However, it's still early in NZ and he probably won't be checking his computer for another hour or so.

Or else I guess Ken will take care of it.

ken's picture

We'll get it updated as soon as we can. It will mean another download for you folks of course, but that's all. For those curious, the Printed map is not so afflicted.

Cheers,

ken's picture

The mistake on the ELECTRONIC regional map of Harn has been corrected. If you have an odd bit of text in the B8 quadrant of your map, please redownload the product.

Thank you.

Ken

rbs's picture

Got the fixed version. Looks good.

Note to others who need to re-download. Click on "My account" at left, then "Files" at top".

robertsconley's picture

I just got it and it looks good. The only issue I have is the fact there is no coast outline which makes printing a b/w version a bit of a problem. You have the option of turning off the mountains and vegetation but doing so is a bit useless with out a line drawing of the coastline.

But other than that it is really good thanks.

Fastred's picture

Mr Sconley - thanks for that feedback. Its an interesting idea, and we will look into it for future updates.

Jeremy

Hi.
I've known about Hârn for a long time but only decided to take the plunge and purchase HârnWorld, Cities of Hârn (from a used item website), Kingdom of Kanday, Tournament Supplement, etc. I just HAD to have this map. Fantastic.

You might want to consider the following map setting if you don't want to destroy your color printer. Turn "Vegetation & Relief" off, turn "Tribal Ranges TR720" on and "Political TR720 Peripheries" on. You won't get black and white, but you will get a nice, pastel colored map that will probabaly print reasonably well in B&W. Until the folks at Kelestia can get the boundaries in, this is probably your best work-around solution.

baronulrich's picture

I did not notice earlier, but if you use the suggested setting from previous post, a couple of areas will "disappear" from your map:
1) Mirath Islands
2) Afarazir Islands (this is probably biggest problem)
3) The islands inside Lake Benath
4) Chera Islands (Southwest corner of map.
5) Gyzem and Shata Islands (south edge of map)
6) Keron, Teben and Gai Islands (in Garvin Bay)
There may be more but these were the most obvious.
So -- not a perfect solution, but still gets you part of the way there...

Allan's picture

I have always understood that the water courses marked on the earlier maps were not to scale, would this still be true of the new map of Harn? Or has the detail extended to mapping them more accurately.
Thanks
Allan

DeathFromAbove's picture

Hi,

I've purchased the map, in PDF, because I'de like to print sections of what I'm going to need during play.

While the quality of the work is exceptional, I haven't found a way to display "minor" settlements.

For example cities like Phira, etc., are out of the way.
I found this odd, and the usefulness of the product is greatly hampered, at least for my needs.

While I'm not interested in seeing every manor, minor settlements could be very useful.
Especially the salt way, in Tharda dominions, is "blank" of features.

If I'm wrong, and these settlements are "visible", can you explain how?

Thanks.

ken's picture

Watercourses, roads, settlement markers, none of these things can (generally) be scaled correctly on maps of this scale. Some of the very wide rivers perhaps, but not the others.

ken's picture

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here. Cities, Castles, and Keeps are displayed on the regional map, and this includes Phira.

rbs's picture

Ken, I think he's complaining that since only "major" locations (i.e, cities, castles and keeps) are marked, there are areas of the map, even settled areas, that don't have much in the way of settlements marked.

Fastred's picture

The Hârn Interactive Map is the same scale as the original, printed, regional map of Hârn.

The Hârn Interactive map shows cities, castles, keeps and a few other key sites such as religious establishments, forts and ruins. It does not show individual manors - but it was not intended to at this scale. It is is a "regional" scale map, not a "kingdom" or "atlas" scale map.

Hi Kelestians,

With Adobe Professional, can I add my own layers to the Hârn interactive map?

Thanks,

Dan.

Fastred's picture

I'm not sure that Adobe Professional allows you to "create" layers, but I'm actually not sure. Adobe Illustrator does, but again, I'm not sure if this will work for Harn Interactive.

I might be PDF dumb but when I open the PDF I see the Harn Island map but no real details. The north is a big baby blue blotch. Kaldor is a big purple blotch, Tharda orange, etc.

Misyn shows terrain detail as does Setha Heath and the Afarazir Islands but the text often looks likes overlaying eachother.

Am I viewing this wrong? I hear comments about it being a beautiful map and feel like I'm missing something.

UPDATE
I'm a moron. I recently setup this computer and instead of Adobe Reader it had some PDF complete thing for my mobile.

ken's picture

Hopefully your PDF Complete application has some sort of facility to turn layers on and off. What you're seeing sounds like you might have all the layers of the map visible at the same time. Can't tell you how PDF Complete handles layers, but that's almost certainly your problem. It's not supposed to look like that. :)

blackhorde's picture

Viewing the PDF with PDF Reader resolved the problem. :) PDF Complete is some mobile version that doesn't handle all the niceties the Harn PDF has in it.

blackhorde's picture

I ordered one of these and it never arrived. Who should I contact about this? I used the Contact Us tab. Anything further?

ken's picture

Nope, we'll track down the info and see what might have happened.

jeffdlane's picture

What font is used on the harn map?

jeffdlane's picture

Is it possible to get the original .psd file? I want to edit some of the layers.

ken's picture

No. We will not be releasing the base files used to create these maps. One reason is that they are simply too large (we're talking gigabytes in size)

jeffdlane's picture

so is it possible to edit the layers at all?

ken's picture

It depends on what sort of editing you're looking to do. If you can tell me specifically what you're trying to do, I might be able to suggest a method.

Cheers,

Ken

jeffdlane's picture

Sure. Mostly, I'd like to add new cities and add city names (preferably to the correct layers so that I can hide them when I want)

ken's picture

OK.

It may not be terribly elegant, but if you have Adobe Creative Suite, you ought to be able to use the snapshot tool in Adobe Acrobat to take a snapshot of the map (in whatever layer configuration you want), and then paste that into an Illustrator file. Then add a layer to place your custom settlements and towns. When you're done, save the resulting Illustrator file as a PDF and there you have it.

Gothmog's picture

Question about the down load file. You get the pdf of the map, a pdf of the map key and a macros file, which has another pdf of the map... this one does not open. Is that correct? or do I have some sort of problem?

Fastred's picture

Gothmog

The download zip file has the following contents:

  • the multi-layered PDF map
  • the PDF index of the locations / entries on the map

I don't know what the 'macros' file you are referring to is? I haven't struck this before.

Sir Dirk's picture

On my interactive map, all that shows up is Tro Iánt. I don't know Tro Iánt, never read about Tro Iánt. I want Trobridge!

Thank you. :)

Jack's picture

Iant is the Harnic word for bridge, as in Tro Iant, Naniom Iant, and Osel Iant.

Sir Dirk's picture

I suppose that's mentioned somewhere and I just missed it.

rbs's picture

It's not really mentioned elsewhere, and it's also a bit of a discrepancy.

If you look at the Trobridge Inn D20 adventure module that was published in 2001, there's a comment saying the location is actually named "Noliant" in Harnic. Presumably this is a contraction for "Nolah Iant".

This statement is not in the original Trobridge Inn article, and I'm not sure that Robin had much to do with the 2001 publication. But the word "Iant" did make it into his working lexicon file as Harnic for bridge, and so he somehow ended up labeling the spot "Tro Iant" on the regional map.

Jack's picture

Given that Trobridge was identified as a contraction of Troll Bridge ("though there are no recent reports..."), the Noliant contraction of Nolah Iant makes a lot of sense, NRC input or no. (Of course, that's assuming that Harnic contractions exist and follow English contraction rules.)

I think Sir Dirk has stumbled on to a valid error here. The map should be labeled ALL in Harnic, meaning either Nolah Iant or Nol'iant or Noliant. Good catch...

Balesir's picture

What's more, it's 'Tro Iánt' on both the 'English' and 'Hârnic' label layers. I would say it should be 'Trobridge' on the 'English' layer and 'Noliant' on the Hârnic, personally, but others may feel differently.

Puster's picture

I just noted that the "Special Feature" layer includes the name for Gedan - it should be in the "Special Feature Name"-layer.

Shealladh's picture

Just noticed a glitch on the map after buying the CG5000-G1-Orbaal-Gyfyn Map.

In Grid G1, the island is split in half, like in the original Harn map. However the Interactive map has BÍJÔ ISLAND (SPÉJER ISLAND) has the island more to the east without splitting it between F1 & G1.

AndersArvidsson's picture

On the Harn Regional Interactive Map (which is wonderful and an amazing piece) I've noticed that the Nephen is shown as navigable between Naniom Bridge and Lake Arain, and thus Azadmere. I think it's well established that there are several cataracts in L4 along Kazhar Gorge and midway on the Zerhun stretch. Karak rapids, Ardol rapids, Ferla rapids...

Is that something that can be updated?

Tempest13's picture

There is nothing to change. take a look at the original Harn Map and compare it to the Interactive map and you will see no differences. Just because Tom D. decided to take poetic license with his map squares does not invalidate either of the bigger maps.

AndersArvidsson's picture

So... why would anyone use mules and roads at all, as the River Neph is fully navigable between Azadmere and Tashal?

Tempest13's picture

It isn't. The original map did not show all possible issues with navigation. The map needs to be used in context with the Harndex and other material. Obviously if the River Neph WAS navigable along its full length the Dwarves would have used it, since they do not there must be some reason for that.
